Bring Augmented and Virtual Reality into Your Classroom with Verizon's Free Immersive Learning Resources

Bring Augmented and Virtual Reality into Your Classroom with Verizon's Free Immersive Learning Resources

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Donally, an educator passionate about bringing augmented and virtual reality into the classroom. Jaime shared with me the tremendous work that Verizon is doing to make these immersive technologies more accessible for teachers through their Verizon Innovative Learning HQ platform

As someone always seeking new ways to engage my students, I was thrilled to learn about Verizon's free AR and VR resources. Jamie demonstrated how easy it is for teachers to get started with these tools by creating a free account at verizon.com/myedtechlife.

The site offers step-by-step guidance on implementing AR and VR activities in the classroom. I was impressed that Verizon and content partners like McGraw Hill have developed complete lesson plans incorporating these technologies across subjects, including math, science, and social studies. No more having to reinvent the wheel!

A highlight for me was seeing the McGraw Hill math app that brings concepts to life through 3D manipulatives and real-world objects. As a former math teacher, I love letting students interact with shapes rather than memorize formulas. This type of hands-on learning facilitated by AR and VR is exactly what we need to equip students with 21st-century skills.

I appreciated Jamie's practical advice on getting started with the tech you can access. With options for web-based apps, you don't necessarily need expensive headsets to begin exploring. The goal is to find tools aligned with your learning and educational objectives.

Our students are digital natives who expect engaging technology in the classroom. AR and VR enable the active, student-centered learning environment in today's students to thrive. Jamie's enthusiasm for these technologies is contagious because she focuses not on the tools themselves but on how they can empower personalized learning.

Her work with Verizon on this initiative is driven by a desire to make immersive tech accessible to all students, not just those in well-funded schools. During our interview, Jamie commented, "It's empowering, personalized learning for our students." I couldn't agree more! With Verizon's support, lack of funding and resources need not be barriers to providing next-generation learning experiences.

I'm excited to start integrating some of these activities into my instruction. The Verizon Innovative Learning HQ offers everything educators need to get started with AR and VR, including free online courses for professional development. I appreciate visionary partners like Verizon and McGraw Hill who understand how technologies like these, when thoughtfully implemented, can create more equitable, engaging learning for all students.
